Heat alert issued for Valley this week

HARLINGEN — Weather forecasters have issued a heat alert for the Rio Grande Valley from today until the end of the week.

Heat indices (the feels-like temperature) will range from 105 to 110 degrees for a few hours in the afternoon through Friday.

Included in the alert area are Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, Kenedy and Starr counties.

National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville say potentially dangerous heat and humidity levels will be even higher Tuesday and Wednesday in Hidalgo and Starr counties, with head indices soaring to between 111 and 113 degrees in the afternoon.

Forecasters also say there is an elevated risk of rip currents along gulf beaches with winds today of up to 38 mph.
