Heat index could hit 110 today

HARLINGEN — The National Weather Service has issued an alert to possibly dangerous heat in the Rio Grande Valley today.

The heat index, or “feels-like” temperature, is expected to reach between 105 and 110 degrees during peak heating hours this afternoon.

Included in the alert are Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, Kenedy and Starr counties.

Actual temperatures today will hit 95 in Brownsville, 97 in Harlingen, 103 in McAllen and 102 in Edinburg.

Forecasters also issued an alert for boaters in the gulf to be aware of the possibility of thunderstorms from the Port of Brownsville to Baffin Bay from between 20 and 60 nautical miles offshore.
