Honeys, Clovers and Jags send players to IWFA Showcase

With one more weekend left in the IWFA season, some of the league’s best will be on full display Saturday afternoon at the Golazo Soccer Complex in Pharr as part of the IWFA Showcase. Kickoff is slated for a 2:30 p.m. before the Division II and Division I title games.

The RGV Clovers and Harlingen Honeys led the way with six selections each followed by five Weslaco Lady Jaguars to make the showcase roster. Due to the RGV Vixens playing in the Super Bowl, no Vixens made the showcase roster.

“I’m excited and thankful to have been chosen to play in the showcase,” said Clovers running back/linebacker Mindy Barrientes. “I love playing this game because the adrenaline it gives you is such a thrill. I can’t wait to hit the field Saturday.”

The Honeys finished the season with a 5-3 record and a trip to the playoffs. The Honeys fell to the Houston Lady Jags in the first round of the playoffs. The list of Honeys to make the showcase were Crystal Prado, Darleen Yanez, Vicki Vento II, Melissa Rios, Selina Renee and Ashley Romero.

The Weslaco Lady Jaguars made some noise in their inaugural season, going 4-3 and making the playoffs. The Lady Jags tasted playoff success with a win over the Laredo Lady Warhawks before falling to the Rockport Her-ricanes.

Diamond De Leon, Destiney Renee, Monica Calderon, Chia Vang and Kaylen Lopez will represent the Lady Jags in the showcase.

Despite the youth and inexperience from the RGV Clovers, the blue and gold checked in a solid year. The Clovers finished 4-3 and secured a spot in the postseason. The Clovers season ended in the first round of the playoffs with a loss to the STX Phoenix.

The Clovers will send Claire Zavala, Mindy Barrientes, Rosie Gomez, Lynda Casarez and Anjelika Rocha to Saturday’s game.
