City Hall renovations delayed by new convention center features

Officials are putting off a $1.3 million project to renovate the City Hall’s second floor.

That’s because the city has added $1.75 million to the convention center’s price tag, pushing its total cost to $16.7 million.

Now, the city plans to dip into the Harlingen Community Improvement Board’s $6.5 million fund balance to pay for much of the center’s new features — the same source it planned to tap to fund City Hall’s renovation.

It’s the second project the city has decided to postpone since announcing it is funding the convention center’s additional features.

Last week, commissioners and members of the Community Improvement Board decided against borrowing money to turn Lon C. Hill Park into a multimillion-dollar destination park.

Officials now plan to use cash and grants to build the park, with a total cost of $8.5 million, in five phases during a period of as long as eight years.

Harlingen City Manager Dan Serna said he had not determined when the city would launch the project to renovate City Hall.
