Figueroa to headline Premier Boxing Champions show

Weslaco brothers Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. and Brandon Lee “Heartbreaker” Figueroa are scheduled to appear on a fight card together for the third time on July 15 when “Panterita” headlines the Premier Boxing Champions show at renovated Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

The two brothers have previously appeared on the same fight shows at Hidalgo’s State Farm Arena (June 26, 2015) and at San Antonio’s AT&T Center (Dec. 12, 2015).

“Panterita” (26-0-1, 19 knockouts) is scheduled to fight in the 12-round main event on July 15 to be televised live on Fox Sports and Fox Deportes.

In a matchup of 147-pounders, Omar Jr. will be going against Californian Robert Guerrero (33-5-1, 18 KOs). Both “Panterita’ and Guerrero are former world champions.

Brandon (12-0, nine KOs) recently was added to the fight show’s undercard and his opponent was announced last week. Brandon, a super bantamweight, is scheduled to face Eliecer Aquino (19-2-1, 13 KOs) of the Dominican Republic.

Aquino is the third fighter to be lined up as an opponent for “Heartbreaker.” The previous two opponents who were lined up to face Brandon apparently backed out.

“I hope this one sticks,” said Omar Figueroa Sr., the manager for his two sons’ boxing careers. Figueroa Sr. said he just found out about Aquino as the new opponent to face his son over the weekend.

Both Omar Jr. and Brandon are currently in California preparing for their July 15 fights under the guidance of trainer Joel Diaz. They’ll continue to train in California until the week of the fight show, when they are scheduled to travel directly to New York.

While Omar Jr.’s fight is scheduled to be televised as the show’s main event, Figueroa Sr. said he is uncertain at this point whether Brandon’s bout will also be televised.

Brandon last fought on May 2 when he defeated Luis Fernando Saavedra via an eight-round unanimous decision in California. “Panterita” has taken some time off to recuperate from injuries and his last fight was a 12-round unanimous decision victory against Antonio DeMarco on Dec. 12, 2015, in San Antonio.
