HARLINGEN — Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath paid a quick visit to the Rio Grande Valley to talk about changes to the STAAR Report Card aimed at increasing parent engagement.
The commissioner met with educators and students at Gutierrez Middle School in the Harlingen school district, where he briefly toured the school and met with coding and robotics classes.
The revamped report cards allow parents to see their child’s score on the annual State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, exam evaluation and online resources where they can even access the questions asked and see what the student answered correctly, incorrectly and even compare progress from year to year.
“What we’ve tried to do is equip parents as much as possible with information that they can use to help their children,” Morath said during the visit. “For too many years and for too many parents the STAAR tests come without context.”
The report cards will be made available to parents starting June 30, for students grades 3rd to 8th. Each student’s performance level will be categorized as Masters Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level and Does Not Meet Grade Level.
