Football games are often won in the trenches because the game is truly a battle of attrition.
This past weekend, more than 30 offensive linemen attended the 2017 South Texas Select Underclassman Showcase in Corpus Christi and the Valley was represented well with San Benito’s Hector De Jesus being awarded the camp’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.
The Valley Morning Star sat down with De Jesus to discuss his recent accolade.
Q: What was the O-line challenge like?
A: I’ve been working very hard on improving my skills, strength and speed so it was a good way for me to showcase my improvement and abilities against other skilled players.
Q: Did you learn any new techniques?
A: Yes, I learned a couple of new drills to help me with my footwork in my pass protection.
Q: What was it like going up against guys not from the Valley?
A: It was a good way to see other talent from around South Texas and I believe it really helped me get better.
Q: How important is O-line play?
A: I really believe it’s one of the most important, if not the most important position in the game.
Q: What was it like winning the award?
A: It’s a blessing to have received the award and an eye-opening experience to know that coaches are starting to notice my abilities.
Q: How was Coach Meaux and Coach Milby?
A: They were two very good coaches who were focused on getting each and every one of the linemen better.
Q: Who is your favorite offensive lineman in the NFL?
A: Richie Incognito, who is the offensive guard for the Buffalo Bills. I like him because he plays very aggressively and really represents what offensive line play should look like.
