HARLINGEN — National Weather Service forecasters have issued an alert for a moderate risk of rip currents on Gulf beaches through the Memorial Day holiday.
Beach-goers on Gulf beaches in South Texas should be prepared to encounter rip currents through Monday.
“Remember to swim near a lifeguard if possible or use a non-inflatable flotation device, such as a life jacket or boogie board,” forecasters said.
If caught in a rip current, lifeguards say a person should not fight the current but swim with it parallel to the beach until the rip current weakens, and then go ashore.
If you can’t escape the rip current, float or tread water and wave your arm and shout to attract help.
Temperatures today through Sunday will range from the low 90s near the coast to low 100s in the upper Valley.
On Memorial Day, highs will be from 90 to the mid-90s with a 20-percent chance of thunderstorms, forecasters say.
