Small craft advisory issued for bay, gulf

HARLINGEN — The National Weather Service has issued small craft advisories for both the Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico.

A deepening trough just east of the Rockies and a high over the Southeast will create an avenue for strong southeast winds today and tonight and possibly into early Wednesday.

Seas on the gulf will build to hazardous levels as well.

There is a moderate risk of rip currents at South Padre Island beaches and at Boca Chica State Park.

The small craft advisory for the bay covers the Port of Brownsville north to the Arroyo Colorado and from there as far north as Baffin Bay.

Winds will be from 23 to 29 mph and the advisory will be in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday.

In the gulf, the advisory covers the mouth of the Rio Grande north to Baffin Bay and will remain in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Winds in the gulf will be from 23 to 29 mph with gusts to 38 mph.

Seas in the gulf will measure five to seven feet near the shore and six to eight feet offshore.
