Kayak Race/Regatta slated on Resaca

San Benito’s inaugural Resaca City Kayak Regatta will take place Saturday near the Heavin Trail.

Onsite registration will run from 6-8 a.m, the welcome and blessing of the fleet begins at 7:45 a.m. followed at 8:30 a.m. with the first heat, and 8:45 a.m. for men’s competition.

The top four race finals in each division are slated at 4 p.m. An awards ceremony for first, second and third places in both the women and men’s division and bucket awards.

“Our vision for this event is big,” said Mike Frazier, co-chairman of the regatta. “We are anticipating that thousands of people will attend this event, and that it will meet with great success this year, and in years to come.”

Frazier said more volunteers are needed so he is inviting all community groups and businesses to contact him at (956) 793-4244.

Competitors must provide their own kayaks and life vests. The cost to enter the regatta is $55.

Organizers say the proceeds from the regatta will be used to fund the building of a Frisbee park at South Park and the rest will go toward scholarships for students.
