Rio Hondo submits grant proposal for state trail funds

HARLINGEN — The work Rio Hondo officials have already completed linking trails and city parks makes it a good bet to land some special TxDOT funding, officials say.

Rio Hondo City Manager Ben Medina submitted an application last week to the Harlingen-San Benito Metropolitan Planning Organization, winning its approval to seek the TxDOT money.

TxDOT in January called for proposals to fund municipal projects from its Transportation Alternative Set-Aside Program.

“I believe we do have a strong chance because we’ve already built some of it,” Medina said this week.

The estimated $350,000 project will complete a trail link on North Robertson Street to South Robertson Street along an abandoned railroad right-of-way out to Rio Hondo County Park, Medina said.

“We’ve done certain parts of our trail system and the first part is the road is paved, markings are on the street of North Reynolds Street all the way to Bates Road, and then it follows on the railroad right-of-way behind the elementary school and connects to Robertson,” Medina said.

“So we’ll be making that loop, finishing off that loop.”
