SAN JUAN — A possible attempt by a high school student to set himself on fire during a Thursday morning class was averted, according to Pharr- San Juan- Alamo school district officials.

The PSJA Early College High School student doused himself with gasoline during a fine arts class in front of his peers, who were able to stop him before he could light himself on fire.

“Thanks to a quick response from fellow classmates, he did not cause harm to himself or others,” a news release states. “Faculty members and students secured the area and that portion of the building was evacuated.”

The San Juan Fire Department, EMS and the city Police Department responded to the incident and the student was taken to a local hospital. Officials said the school is providing counseling to the students through the crisis team and parents are being notified.

“We are very grateful to these students, faculty of PSJA High, City of San Juan emergency response teams and district security personnel for their professional and prompt response,” officials stated. “We are thankful that what could have been a very tragic situation was avoided.”
