SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The 3-year-old girl who was hit and run over by a motorist a mile north of beach access 5 remains in stable condition according to Cameron County Park Rangers Chief of Police Horacio Zamora.
This past Saturday afternoon, around 2:40 p.m., the child was hit while on the beach by a GMC truck being driven by a woman.
The 23-year-old motorist stopped to offer aid to the child.
Zamora said the woman passed a Breathalyzer test that found 0.0 alcohol in her blood. He said she even offered a blood test on her own behalf.
No charges have been filed against the 23-year-old motorist.
The child was driven to Laguna Vista by the South Padre Island fire department where she was airlifted to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
Zamora said the child was later sent to a San Antonio hospital and underwent surgery on her pelvis and is now in stable condition.
“I believe the child was on the shoreline and ran in front of the truck,” Zamora said yesterday over the phone. “Parents need to be vigilant on the beach.”
He said the speed limit between the shoreline and vegetation is 10 mph.
“Parents have to be very aware of the drivers and must keep their children next to them and safe at all times,” Zamora said.
He said drivers should drive with caution and be very aware of the people in the water and near the dunes while the driving.
“These accidents happen,” Zamora said. “But it doesn’t happen that often.”
