There is a Texas Bathroom Bill working its way through the Legislature. Senate Bill 6, which already passed the Texas Senate, would set bathroom policy in the state.
This basically deals with the issue that dictates that transgender individuals would have to use public/school bathrooms based on the sex listed on their birth certificate.
There is an apparent difference of opinion between State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. (father) and State Rep. Eddie Lucio III (son) dealing with this bill. Eddie Jr. supports it while Eddie III opposes it.
One of the most important aspects of the 9th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is that it protects the privacy rights of all citizens.
Imagine a situation where the parents of school-age daughter(s) or son(s) having to deal with public/school situations where their children have to share bathroom facilities with transgender students.
Is this an invasion of privacy in one of the most intimate situations?
On the other hand, the 14th Amendment mandates that states provide equal protection of the laws to all its citizens dealing with nearly all aspects of daily life.
Should it be left to transgender individuals to decline which public/school bathroom to use of have it decide by the sex on their birth certificate?
One side wants to protect privacy rights while the other side wants to protect the equal protections rights. Both sides have legal justifications for their views.
Hopefully, this public issue between Eddie Jr. and Eddie III will not interfere with their father/son relationship.
