SAN BENITO — It was extra special moment as Angie Valle signed on the dotted line Thursday afternoon to compete in track and cross country for RangerCollege.
The young woman not only had the support of the San Benito CISD administration behind her, but also her mother, Axle Valle, who also happens to be the Lady Greyhounds head track coach.
“It was a pleasure to be able to be support Angie as a mom in cross country and then as a coach in track,” said Coach Valle. “I’m happy that the coaches from Ranger saw potential in Angie and that she’ll continue to do what she loves.”
Angie, meanwhile, was thrilled that her mother played such a big part in her high school athletic career.
“Everyone thought it was difficult to be coached by their mom, but we maintained a good relationship in my time here,” Angie said. “To be able to say I had my mom as a coach is pretty cool and it’s an experience I’ll forever hold dear to me.”
In track, Angie competes in the 400, 800 and 4×4 mile relay, and has the Lady Greyhounds in contention for a District 32-6A title this season. However, she also was a standout cross country runner, who helped the Lady Greyhounds bring home a district championship this past fall.
“Winning district and making it to regionals was a good way to finish my senior year in cross country,” said Angie. “I’m going to miss my team and of course my mom, but it’s a step forward in the right direction.”
RangerCollege is located 90 miles west of FortWorth and is affiliated with the NationalJunior College Athletic Association.
The Rangers compete in Region V of the NJCAA and are a Division I athletic program.
“If you told me I was going to compete in college, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Angie said. “It feels awesome to have this opportunity and I’m looking forward to competing for the Rangers.”
Angie desires to one day be a speech pathologist and help children develop the skills to be fluent in their communication.
