San Benito to host Fitness Expo

SAN BENITO — The San Benito Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the city of San Benito, will host the Resaca City Healthy Living & Fitness Expo on March 25.

A 5K Fun-Run, exercise and fitness demos, healthy meal preparation, free flu shots, healthy snacks, body mass measurement and free dental and eye checks and free haircuts will be offered to the public.

Additionally, health screening and healthy information will be offered to the public.

Formerly called “I’m losing it in San Benito Fitness Expo,” the event is incorporating another healthy initiative into its overall scope.

The Expo will serve as a final push for public participation into the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge.” The 12-week competition began on Jan. 9, and concludes March 31 at the Expo.

“This initiative is designed to unite and mobilize the community toward the common goal of transforming to a healthier community,” said Sandee Alvarez, executive director of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s Time Texas” is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, statewide organization focused on dramatically improving the landscape of health and wellness in Texas.

The free program offers tools and services that leverage innovative technology and harness the collective power of Texas’ leading agencies, institutions, organizations and companies to empower Texans to lead healthier lives and build healthier communities.

“The chamber teamed up with the city of San Benito to promote the effort that included challenges to businesses, schools and the public to adopt a healthier lifestyle by incorporating exercise and nutritious eating,” said Letty Gomez, who is the University of Texas Health Science Center’s health outreach worker in the Tu Salud Si Cuenta Program for the City of San Benito.

San Benito currently stands at the 12th highest scoring city with 138,750 earned points in the competition in the small cities category. Points are scored for registering for the program, posting selfies of healthy eating and exercise and from pledges from the city’s elected officials.

Mayor Celeste Sanchez, Mayor Pro Tem Tony Gonzales and Commissioners Rene Villafranco, Joe D. Gonzalez and Esteban Rodriguez signed pledges supporting the program.

The Expo is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on March 25 at the San Benito Community Building, 210 E. Heywood, San Benito.

Registration for the 5K Fun Run can be completed online at www.chamberofsanbenito.com.

Activities for children, nutritionist presentations, healthy food and give-aways are also scheduled.
