Body found: Man identified after shooting Wednesday night

BROWNSVILLE — A man found dead at a local business Wednesday evening has been identified by authorities.

Brownsville police report 50-year-old Jose Guadalupe Martinez suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Police responded to Military Tire and Wheel shop located at 2485 Military Highway in reference to a body being found.

The call came in to the department at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Martinez was found lying face down inside the business.

Police spokesman J.J. Trevino said Martinez was the owner of the business, which is situated on a fairly isolated stretch of Military Highway 281.

The split-level faded orange structure sits at least 100 feet back from the edge of the property, with an empty lot on one side and nothing but trees in sight on the opposite side of the street.

Investigators returned at 11 a.m. Thursday to continue their search of the scene. They also are reviewing surveillance video taken from a shop next door.

Police have yet to determine a motive, and it has not been established if the death was a suicide or murder. An autopsy has been ordered by Cameron County Justice of the Peace Linda Salazar.
