RAYMONDVILLE — Willacy County’s first retirement community might make way for its own taxing district, too.
Today, city commissioners will consider developer Joe Wetegrove’s request to support plans to create a utility district to help him fund water and sewer projects, City Manager Eleazar Garcia said yesterday.
Wetegrove, who is building a retirement community off State Highway 186 in Raymondville’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, is requesting commissioners approve a resolution supporting the creation of Willacy County Municipal Utility District No. 1.
The district, in which the development would be the only taxpayer, would allow Wetegrove to sell bonds to fund utility projects, Garcia said.
The district would help fund utility services for future development, said Margaret Allen, project manager at La Jarra Development.
Allen said the city is providing utility service for La Jarra Senior Living Community, expected to begin opening in April.
Wetegrove plans to build the retirement community across 12 acres of his ranch about a mile east of Raymondville on State Highway 186.
The retirement community made up of an assisted living facility and a memory care center is expected to create at least 38 jobs.
