UTRGV to celebrate International Women’s Day

EDINBURG —– The UTRGV Office of Global Engagement will host two ceremonies to commemorate International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, past, present and future.

The theme this year is #BeBoldForChange.

Ceremonies will be held March 7 at the UC Ballroom on the Edinburg Campus, and at Salón Cassia on the Brownsville Campus on March 8. Both start at noon.

At each event, one student will be given an Outstanding International Female Student Award and a $1,000 scholarship.

“Our office sent applications for international female students to apply for this scholarship, and we received about 50 applications,” said Samantha Lopez, director of UTRGV International Admissions and Student Services. “Our goal at International Admissions and Student Services is to provide resources and a venue for our international students to be recognized for all their achievements.”

Two international female faculty members also will be recognized for their contributions. In Edinburg, Dr. Bin Wang, professor of information systems, will be honored as an Outstanding International Female Faculty; in Brownsville, Dr. Alexandre Couture Gagnon, assistant professor in of Public Affairs, will receive the same honor.

The ceremonies are open to UTRGV students, faculty and staff. The media is invited to attend.
