The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has been selected as one of the top 50 universities for Latinos in the United States by Latino Leaders Magazine.

The institutions listed, according to Latino Leaders, “have excelled in their performance, outreach and academic level in their relation with the Latino student population of the country.”

Dr. Havidán Rodríguez, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, said the recognition solidifies the university’s vision “to be one of the nation’s leaders in higher education, its premier Hispanic-serving institution, and a highly engaged bilingual university.”

“The distributed nature of UTRGV increases our competitive advantage in expanding educational opportunities and generating impactful research and creative work across the Rio Grande Valley, an area that is primarily Hispanic and represents a significant and growing population in Texas and in the United States,” Rodríguez said.

The magazine used information provided by universities, as well as from organizations such as the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), U.S. News and World Report and other reporting agencies, to compile its list.

Latino Leaders based its list on information that included the percentage of Latino student enrollment and Latino faculty at each institution; percentage of students receiving financial aid; academic resources available to students; and outreach efforts to add to overall diversity.

UTRGV is one of four universities from The University of Texas System and 18 Texas institutions of higher education included in the list. Other UT schools on the list include UT Arlington, UT Austin and UT El Paso.
