Dr. Veronica Estrada, UTRGV professor in the College of Education and P-16 Education, accepted an honor Jan. 30 at the national inaugural Conference on Academic Research in Education (CARE) in Las Vegas.
Estrada, part of the UTRGV Department of Teaching and Learning, along with two other recipients from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and University of Cincinnati, were awarded the first McGraw Hill Distinguished Scholar Awards.
The national conference recognizes quality academic excellence among CARE participants and encourages able scholars to continue participating in the conference.
“It feels great to have my work recognized from a national organization, in my field, and by peers from all over the country who value my educational research,” Estrada said.
CARE is a newly established annual research conference sponsored by the UNLV College of Education that brings together scholars from around the country and abroad in order to present scholarships related to a variety of contexts, including theory, practice, empirical research and conceptual advancement.
The McGraw Hill award, named for the textbook publisher, will be given to three or four scholars annually, who will be recognized at the annual conference.
An ad hoc committee of scholars chose Estrada for the honor based on her research conference presentations, journal publications and other scholarly contributions to her field.
Estrada has published numerous publications, including co-authoring “Classroom Connections to Teaching: A Resource for Teachers of Latino Students.” She also is the recipient of thousands of dollars in grants and has presented at numerous conferences on innovative teaching practices.
