Pope’s ‘eyes and ears’ to visit RGV, meet border bishops

VALLEY — The apostolic nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, will visit the Rio Grande Valley Feb. 13-15 for the Texas-Mexico Border Bishops conference in San Juan.

Bishops along both sides of the border, from Brownsville to Las Cruces, N.M., come together twice a year and the two countries alternate as hosts.

Pierre is the “eyes and ears” of Pope Francis as the Holy See’s U.S. ambassador. He’s served as a papal diplomat around the world.

Bishop of Brownsville Daniel E. Flores is a co-chair of meeting.

Pierre is the first nuncio in the Valley during Flores’ time as bishop. Pierre spent nine years as the nuncio to Mexico, and speaks fluent English and Spanish. The bishop said he was sure he’d have lots of questions and looks forward to the dialogue.
