SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – In need of some great chili?
Look no further than Louie’s Backyard tomorrow.
Last year’s chili expo and mercado was a huge success with 17 teams and more than 30 different chili concoctions served to the public.
So, there’s no reason to believe this year won’t be even bigger and better and it’s all in an effort to raise money for a good cause.
Your $5 admission will go to the Walk for Women organization to help women battling breast cancer.
There will be chili, beans, great music and outdoor shopping all to help the great cause.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the chili cookoff winners as well as plaques to those winning each categories.
7 a.m. – Doors open for cooking teams
11 a.m. – Mercado and cook off doors open
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Live music by Pelican West
Noon – Chili and bean cookoff tasting begins (event includes unlimited chili, or until it runs out)
2 p.m. – Awards presentation
WHAT – South Padre Island Chili Expo (spice) and Mercado benefitting the Walk for Women

WHEN – Saturday, Feb. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHY – All proceeds from the Spice admission and Mercado booth benefit SPI Walk for women, an all-volunteer 501c(3) organization committed to helping wome in the lower Rio Grande Valley with financial and diagnostic support as they battle breast cancer.
ADMISSION – $5 to enjoy chili and beans and dance to the music of Pelican West
In 2003, a small group of local area women and the community of SPI rallied together to raise funds for a local woman who was fighting breast cancer and in need of financial help.
The thousands of dollars raised enabled her to focus on fighting and beting breast cancer, which she did.
However, the group of women who gathered together had a new resolve – to ease the financial burder that fighting breast cancer imposes on women and their families. That’s when Walk for Women was formed, an all volunteer 501c(3) organization committed to help ing women in the lower Rio Grande Valley with financial, prosthetic and diagnostic support as they battle breast cancer.
Now, the group holds several events to raise money, including a fishing tournament, awareness walk, a casino night and of course the chili cookoff. The group states that women fighting breast cancer and their families should not have to choose between paying the electric bill or paying the insurance deductible; paying for a chemo treatment or buying groceries. For this reason, until there is a cure, these women and this organization vows to continue its mission to raise money to help local area women battling breast cancer.
