Baseball star helping out 5-year-old with top-notch camp

SAN BENITO — It looked like it was never coming down.

Nathaniel Garcia had just belted a 479-foot home run to straight out center field at the Marlins baseball stadium in Florida.

“It would have gone out of the park if it hadn’t hit the Marlins sculpture,” Nathaniel said proudly.

And big smack earned him $479.

He knew exactly what to do with the money. He he tossed it to San Benito resident Ayssa Mercado, 5, who suffers from a rare life threatening disease called MECP2 Duplication Syndrome.

Nathaniel, a San Benito resident, had been invited to attend the International Power Showcase Baseball camp.

There, he participated in the home run derby charitable cause to help raise money for the community.

But that was a few weeks ago.

Now, this weekend with the help of his family and friends, he will raise more money for Ayssa on the baseball diamond once again.
