Junior League Library drive begins tonight with cocktails

HARLINGEN — The Junior League of Harlingen’s library fundraiser is about to hit the clock for 2017.

The Junior League begins its drive to raise $300,000 for the Harlingen Public Library tonight with its Cocktail Kickoff Party at the library from 5 to 8 p.m. at 410 76 Drive.

The event is of course limited to participants over the age of 21. Tickets are $10.

“It is with great excitement that the Junior League of Harlingen celebrates 70 years of community service in the Harlingen area,” Elizabeth Cowan Phillips, president of the Junior League of Harlingen, said yesterday. “Our longstanding tradition of community support will be celebrated throughout 2017 as we raise funds for two spaces within the Harlingen Public Library.

“We ask the community to join us as we kick off our campaign to raise funds for the teen and children’s area of the Harlingen Public Library … These spaces will serve the children of Harlingen for decades to come,” she added.

The Junior League selected the library fundraising project for its 70th anniversary celebration this year, and intends to cover the costs of renovating the Children’s Library and creating a Teen Library.

But officials with the Junior League didn’t stop there. They’ve expanded their initial limited design plan beyond the two specialty libraries to encompass the entire library.

Junior League leaders say the renovation blueprint for the entire library will enable the library to renovate in “bite-sized pieces.”

Library Director Dauna Campbell has said the facility intends to convert balconies into usable space, design and construct a computer lab and add a café, among other things.

“Our girls are excited and anxious to get this campaign started,” the League’s Amy Muniz said.

The Junior League and Harlingen Public Library officials will host three focus groups in the coming weeks seeking input on design for the young adult and children’s area.

On Saturday, the South Texas Sizzler race fundraiser for the library will feature 5K, 10K and one-mile runs.
