Yzaguirre jury selection starts later this week

CORPUS CHRISTI — Jury selection for Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. has been pushed back to Wednesday.

Senior State District Judge Manuel Banales is presiding over the case. He returns from meetings in Austin on Wednesday.

Yzaguirre is charged with 11 counts of abuse of official capacity, 10 counts of bribery, one count of engaging in organized criminal activity and one county of official oppression.

Eighty residents of Nueces County have been selected for Wednesday morning’s jury selection process, according to court officials.

Yzaguirre has not been permitted back into his office until the trial is over. He has been on paid leave, with a salary of approximately $86,230, according to a salary survey by the Texas Association of Counties.
