Rio Hondo kids ready to witness history

WASHINGTON — A group of 25 Rio Hondo ISD students were all dressed in their winter jackets, gloves, hats and scarves as they toured the streets of Washington along the banks of the Potomac River yesterday.

Rio Hondo Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Atkinson is leading the group of students on a college tour, and to witness President Elect Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration today.

The school field trip to the nation’s capitol began Wednesday and the group is scheduled to return home Saturday.

The district planned the college tour to coinside with the presidential inauguration.

“It’s an educational opportunity of a lifetime for our students,” said Jessica Gonzales, Rio Hondo ISD school board member. “Our students will remember this journey and it’s a lifetime educational opportunity.”

Even though he has since decided not to attend, Congressman Filemon Vela gave the group tickets to attend the 57th United States Presidential Inauguration.
