Longtime resident talks about making San Benito prosperous

SAN BENITO — There are several points Reyes Castillo says can help you in your business, organization and family.

Earlier this week, the independent certified coach with The John Maxwell Team stopped by the San Benito Chamber of Commerce to share his thoughts for a prosperous San Benito.

Born in Florida, Castillo is a longtime San Benito resident is also a pastor and teacher.

“I wasn’t born in San Benito but I got here as fast as I could,” he said.

Castillo said his principles can be utilized in any aspect of life.

The John Maxwell Team is an elite, global community of certified coaches, trainers, speakers, and other professionals. They are leaders devoted to inspiring positive life transformation by helping people achieve their personal and professional potential.

The Team was created by international best-selling author, speaker and leadership expert John C. Maxwell.

“I believe we need a fresh vision for San Benito. I have been here for most of my life and I am a part of this community,” Castillo said.

Self Awareness

It’s just not enough knowing, but a discovery of what is already available and accessible.

“In San Benito, we have discovered that there are more things being offered than we thought,” Castillo said.

The community and business community are urged to be aware of their surroundings.

“Sometimes we don’t know where we are at because sometimes we are too busy trying to accomplish things in our every day life that we don’t even know where we are at,” Castillo said.

Once a person knows where they are, then they will know what needs improvement.

There is always room for improvement, said Castillo.

It is a choice, decision and attitude.

“For things to get better, we need to get better,” Castillo said. “Sometimes when we try to improve our weaknesses we ignore what we are already strong at.”

Be Present

Have a vision for tomorrow.

Castillo said a vision for a greater tomorrow keeps you moving today and gives you hope today.

When one loses sight of that focus, Castillo said it is easy to get lost.

“You are either looking ahead or you are living in last year’s mistakes,” Castillo said.

Sometimes those mistakes can be a blessing. When we learn what did not work, we do better, Castillo said.

There is a different mind set for business today.

“It doesn’t mean we have to change customer service, some things are still the same. People, if you are good with people, people will be good with you,” Castillo said.

Active listening

Being intentional and active in your listening is one two ways Castillo said business can prosper.

Listen to your customers, Castillo said.

Listening to customers shows them according to Castillo that the business values their customer’s opinion.

“It motivates people. They feel important,” Castillo said. “They need to be valued.”

Anticipate

Anticipate the market.

“Some people want to wait and see what happened,” Castillo said. “It happened and it gone. Then there is a closed sign on their doors.”

Risk takers anticipate. When you have been in the market, Castillo said you can see the trends and when the wave is about to take off.

“You want to wait for those moments but you want to be there before everyone,” Castillo said.

Dream

Dreams don’t make communities better.

However, Castillo said dreams that are lived do make communities better.

“Dreams won’t change anything until you live it,” he said.
