Despite ups, downs, battle won at City Hall

HARLINGEN — After four years, it appears Diana Garcia Padilla has won her battle with City Hall.

Since 2012, she’s requested a permit to allow her to sell organically-grown produce from her 35-acre farm off Morris Road.

On Wednesday night, she and several supporters approached the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, armed with about 200 signatures.

Unanimously, the board voted to grant Garcia Padilla the special use permit to sell produce from a farmer’s market on her property, despite the fact that it is zoned as a residential, single family district.

“I want to jump up for joy and touch the stars,” Garcia Padilla said yesterday.

Next week, the city commission will consider ratifying the permit’s approval.
