San Benito water boil continues; officials waiting for lab results

San Benito residents and business owners are being urged to continue boiling their water, this comes after a failure of the city’s water system this weekend. The city says a weekend freeze caused its waterline to leak and a decreased water flow.

City officials say the boil water notice will continue until results from water quality samples are returned later today from a Harlingen-based lab.

“We will pull the samples today, and when we get the word that the results are clear, we will lift the boil notice,” according to Public Works Director Adan Gonzalez.

He says the boil notice was mandated when the water line pressure dropped below 20 pounds per square inch (PSI), as per state law, and not because of any water contamination.

Gonzalez says the water pressure is back to a normal level and the city is using its own water, plus water from Harlingen Waterworks. He says they are in the process of filling ground storage tanks and water towers.

Residents are advised to boil all tap water for at least one minute and cooled before using. You can use faucet water to bath.

CLASSES BEING HELD, BOTTLED WATER FOR STUDENTS

The San Benito school district held classes as scheduled. Students were given bottled water to drink. The nutrition program also used bottled water to prepare the students’ meals.
