Renovate not relocate: City makes decision on City Hall future

HARLINGEN — City Hall will remain exactly where it is right now – at least for a while.

Just months after considering other downtown locations to move the city’s offices all into one spot, city officials have decided to stay put.

But that also means some work to the current facility is necessary.

City commissioners have approved a $1.3 million plan to renovate the current City Hall, with a focus to expand City Commission chambers.

Commissioners went ahead with the project about nine months after approving the city’s 10-year comprehensive plan, which recommended seeking a “one-stop” city hall.

In August, City Manager Dan Serna said officials were considering options, including renovation or relocation.

“The decision has been made to renovate City Hall,” Serna said yesterday. “I think people are going to be proud of City Hall and when they come to the meetings they’ll be more comfortable.”
