San Benito closer to building museum

SAN BENITO — The dream appears to be coming true.

After years of planning, city commissioners today are expected to consider U.S. Economic Development Administration stipulations for the use of a $1 million grant to help build the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum.

The museum is expected to break ground early next month at San Benito Plaza, Mayor Celeste Sanchez said yesterday.

“I’m excited it’s coming to fruition,” Sanchez said. “We’re going to have so much of our history to showcase.”

The 4,000-square-foot center is expected to house the Freddy Fender Museum, the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame and Museum and the San Benito History Museum.

Since 2008, the three museums have shared a 1,000-square-foot area in the city’s Community Center.

Now, the city plans to build a cultural heritage museum facing Heywood Street, near the Community Center and the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center.

The city plans to use a $1 million Economic Development Administration grant and about $700,000 set aside from its general fund, City Manager Manuel de la Rosa said.
