Have coffee with … An advocate of immigrant children’s rights

SAN BENITO — The San Benito Chamber will host its weekly “Coffee With” session this morning.

Today’s speaker will be Tomas D’adamo, volunteer coordinator at The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights in Harlingen.

D’adamo will discuss his role with the organization.

The mission of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights is to promote the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children with due regard to the child’s expressed wishes, according to the convention on the rights of the child and state and federal law.

The center is a champion of the best interests of children who arrive in the United States on their own, from all corners of the world.

Center officials accompany the children to court proceedings, advocating for their best interests, and stand for the creation of a dedicated juvenile immigrant justice system that ensures the safety and well-being of every child.

The meeting will start today at 9:30 a.m. at the Chamber office, 223 S. Sam Houston Blvd.

The “Coffee With” series is all about connecting public officials with the community, said Chamber President Lionel Betancourt.

“The Chamber’s role in this town is to create transparency among all of us,” Betancourt said. “This is something we can build on.”

So far, the public has been able to experience in-depth discussions with mayors, commissioners, school leaders, law enforcement and business officials.

Speakers will also take questions and concerns from the guests.

D’adamo is expected to do the same thing.

“Serious topics to be presented will (hopefully) deal with other issues involving progress in our town and ways to overcome some of the concerns and applaud the good things that happen here,” Betancourt said.
