San Benito schools pushes for college readiness

SAN BENITO — By starting the young ones early, school officials hope students will be college or career ready by the time they graduate.

One of the main objectives of the Re-Imagine 2021 five-year Strategic Plan is all students attend college and beyond.

P-20 is education from pre-kindergarten to graduate school. This past week, the community heard an update on the P-20 portion of the plan.

The Re-Imagine 2012 plan has been in the works since early April, with school staff, teachers, parents, students and business leaders contributing to a draft plan.

According to the final plan, the mission of the school district is to provide a quality education for all students through a positive and safe learning environment, so that its graduates are college, career and workforce ready.

“It aims to be the gold standard in all areas of public education,” Vega said.

It was approved by the board in July and school officials have been implementing the changes ever since.

Under P-20, pre-kindergarten through graduate school, there are five main goals to be implemented over each of the next five years.

Priority One

The San Benito school district will implement a developmentally appropriate and aligned curriculum for prekindergarten and kindergarten students with quality instruction supported through targeted professional development, which ensures students, are post secondary ready.

Year One Goal

To provide a curriculum that is directly aligned to the pre-kindergarten/kindergarten TEKS this includes social emotional, developmental skills.

Status

All elementary schools offer all day pre-kindergarten/ kindergarten.

Priority Two

The school district will create a community network with local governments, institutions of higher education, and community organizations to eliminate barriers for post secondary success.

Year One Goal

A committee will meet to discuss branding, marketing and goals to reduce barriers for post secondary success for all students.

Status

San Benito High School students will be given the framework for developing a tagline and logo.

Create a presentation for P-20 committee that outlines parameters of tagline selection and contents of postsecondary needs assessment and present to the committee who will then choose the best idea.

Priority Three

The school district will create a culture that promotes and emphasizes the importance of academic preparedness and supports the belief that a college education is critical and attainable for all students.

Year One Goal

Re-evaluate students for college readiness.

Status

By using new standards, district officials plan to improve SAT, TSI, SAT and ACT test scores.

Priority Four

The school district will support college and career readiness opportunities in order to provide the proper preparation students will need for success in college.

Year One Goal

All students will be introduced to academic expectations for college and career readiness skills. These will be included in teacher lessons plans.

Status

Officials have already introduced the necessary preparation materials to school leaders.

Priority Five

The school district will ensure early and continuous exposure to college and careers for all students.

Year One Goal

Middle school and high school guidance in college and career exploration supported by Naviance will be provided. Naviance is an online college preparation kit that middle school and high school students are using to keep track of plans, resumes, transcripts and other documents pertaining to college readiness.

Status

The district has added Naviance to the school website. Career cluster finder profile for 10th grade: 436 surveys completed

Board members were all pleased with the update. Like all the other portions of the plan, everything is starting to come together and major strides have been made, said Superintendent Dr. Adrian Vega.

“We are super excited to provide this additional support to students and parents,” he said.
