New county judge Eddie Trevino Jr. to take oath

BROWNSVILLE — Cameron County Judge-Elect Eddie Treviño Jr. is scheduled to be sworn in Wednesday at the Cameron County Court House, and is expected to take the opportunity to detail his vision for the county and the region.

Treviño’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of the historic Dancy Building, at 1100 E. Monroe St. Family, friends, elected officials and other guests will attend the ceremony.

The Brownsville native served as city commissioner from 2001 to 2003 and Brownsville mayor from 2003 to 2007. He ran for the county judgeship in 2010 but lost against Carlos H. Cascos. This time, he defeated Dan Sanchez in the Democratic primary election in May and ran unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election.

Treviño, an attorney, said yesterday that his interest in politics as a way to help his community began at a young age, and that he became involved as soon as he was old enough.

“The successes and positive work that I did … as a city commissioner and especially as mayor were extremely rewarding,” Trevino said. “That’s why I wanted to continue to serve my community and now the entire county.”

Also on yesterday, Treviño met with Matamoros Mayor Jesus J. de la Garza to discuss priorities for the region, including infrastructure improvement projects.

The pair also discussed the need to bolster understanding and coordination between governments on both sides of the border to advance security, trade, tourism, health, transportation and maritime ports and security.

Treviño and de la Garza also talked about the need to promote economic development of the region, and pledged to do everything possible to market the region in a positive light.

To that end, the two announced their intention to establish a regional office of the Matamoros mayor in Cameron County.

“We want to be partners and allies, and be proactive and not reactive, when it comes to working with our friends in Matamoros,” Treviño said.

“As a former mayor, I know greatly how these relationships are developed and continuously nurtured.”
