Downtown geared up for annual Holiday Stroll

HARLINGEN — Downtown merchants will be open late during their annual Holiday Stroll shopping event.

“It’s just like the good old days,” said Ed Meza, Harlingen Downtown director.

Meza said the Holiday Stroll is a time for families and friends to come together and visit the downtown stores to buy and window shop for Christmas presents.

“It’s a festive and nice event,” Meza said. “It’s been going on for a long time and each of the stores has good sales.”

The Downtown Jackson Street Holiday Stroll is expected to attract residents as well as out-of-town shoppers.

Participating stores remain open until 8 p.m. and offer shoppers refreshments, music and in-store specials

Meza said the downtown merchants will have their storefronts decorated with a holiday theme and dressed with their items for sale.

Store owners will have snacks and drinks for shoppers while they browse the store looking for that special someone’s holiday gift.

Santa will be at the Prelude taking photos and the lighting of the city’s tree will happen at 7 p.m.

“We have gift shops, boutiques and restaurants to enjoy,” Meza said. “We are trying to attract visitors from the surrounding communities and the residents to downtown Harlingen.”

The Holiday Stroll will also continue on Dec. 7 and 14.

Meza said Santa will be strolling through downtown on those days visiting the businesses.

“The Downtown Stroll is great shopping and family fun,” he said.
