Harlingen student killed in school bus accident enroute to field trip

EDINBURG — A teenaged boy died after falling off a moving school bus on Highway 281 Monday morning.

The Harlingen CISD school bus was headed north at about 9:30 a.m. on the 1800 block of south Highway 281 for a field trip to UTRGV when the boy fell out of the back emergency door, according to police.

When first responders arrived at the scene the boy was in cardiac arrest and was rushed to McAllen Medical Center with major head trauma where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

Edinburg police continue investigating the cause of the accident and kept one bus with students from Vernon Middle School for questioning, according to district personnel who rushed here to assist with the investigation.

HCISD district spokesman Shane Strubhart said three buses from the middle school were en route to UTRGV, and they will be reviewing camera footage from inside the bus that was involved.
