Early voting setting records

BROWNSVILLE — The first four days of early voting for the 2016 general election have surpassed all records the Cameron County Elections Office has on file.

25,750 registered voters opted to cast early ballots this week and Thursday’s turnout totaled 5,830.

While nearly all of the polling places saw a slight decrease in voters in comparison to earlier in the week, the Brownsville Public Library on Central Boulevard set a one-day record of 1,213 ballots cast, more than twice as many votes as the same day in 2008.

The San Benito Community Building also doubled its figures from 2008 to 2016 where 422 people voted Thursday. Eight years ago on that day only 200 people cast ballots.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza says they’ve had very few problems at the polling places.

“We have the usual concerns as with other elections, nothing exceptional,” said Garza. “The turnout is still very high, which is a very positive sign.”

If you didn’t get an opportunity to vote this past week, more than half the polling places will be open today from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The elections office at the courthouse in Brownsville will also be open on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Early voting runs through Friday, Nov. 4 and the general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
