Day 3 of early voting draws largest turnout

Early voting numbers in Cameron County nearly topped 20,000 during the first three days of early voting for the general election, and the trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

On Wednesday, 6,801 voters cast ballots at the 19 early voting locations throughout the county. It is the largest turnout so far of the 19,920 votes cast since early voting began Monday.

The busiest locations continue to be the Brownsville Public Library on Central Boulevard, the Harlingen County Annex Building on Wilson Road and the San Benito Community Building.

Overall voter turnout in the Harlingen, San Benito and surrounding areas accounted for 41 percent of the ballots cast countywide.

Voting got underway Wednesday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where 562 people took advantage of the polling place. It is one of four medical facilities where early voting will take place. The others include Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Valley Regional Medical Center and New Horizon Medical Center, both in Brownsville.

BISD RACE SURPASSES 7,500 VOTES

The Brownsville Independent School District trustee races also are drawing an unprecedented number of voters. There are 19 candidates vying for four trustee seats, and already 7,565 voters have cast ballots, more than a third of them at the Brownsville Public Library.
