Judge grants motion to move Yzaguirre’s trial of the Valley

A visiting state district court judge this morning granted a motion that will move Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr.’s trial out of the Rio Grande Valley.

A visiting state district court judge this morning granted a motion that will move Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr.’s trial out of the Rio Grande Valley.

Attorney’s representing Yzaguirre and filed a motion for a change of venue for Yzaguirre’s trial citing extensive publicity by the media.

Yzaguirre and several of his employees were arrested in January as the result of a two-year investigation under the code name “Operation Dirty Deeds. The operation was conducted by multi-agencies including the Cameron County District Attorneys Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The investigation was “centered on certain questionable actions and activities” of Yzaguirre’s office, District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said right after the Jan. 6 arrest.

Yzaguirre was indicted on 10 counts of bribery, 11 counts of abuse of official capacity, one count of official oppression and one count of engaging in organized criminal activity.

The charges against the others were dismissed.
