Volleyball notes: District races coming down to the wire in 32-6A and 32-4A

The focus now is shifting to the three remaining available playoff spots in District 32-6A volleyball after Los Fresnos clinched a share of the district championship with Saturday’s 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 victory at Brownsville Hanna.

The playoff-bound Lady Falcons (11-0 in 32-6A) can claim the title outright at home Tuesday against the Harlingen Lady Cardinals. After Los Fresnos, everyone else in 32-6A has at least three losses.

Still, the Lady Falcons don’t want to have any letdowns.

“When we step on the court, every match is a new match and every team is a new team (to play),” Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said. “We just have to realize it’s 0-0 every time we step out there.

“I’m proud of our girls,” she added. “We need three more wins to go undefeated (in district again). It’ll be fun (the rest of the way).”

The three remaining available postseason berths from 32-6A figure to go to either the Lady Cardinals, San Benito, Brownsville Rivera or Hanna. One of those four teams will be left out of the playoff party.

Three matches are left on the 32-6A schedule.

Behind Los Fresnos (11-0) in the district standings are Rivera (8-3), San Benito (7-4), Hanna (7-4), Harlingen (6-5), Weslaco East and Weslaco (both 2-9) and Harlingen South (0-11).

Besides the Lady Cardinals’ match at Los Fresnos, the rest of Tuesday’s 32-6A schedule has San Benito at Hanna, Rivera at Weslaco East and Weslaco at Harlingen South.

DISTRICT 32-4A UPDATE: The Raymondville Lady Kats are on the verge of winning their first league title since 2009 as they enter the final two games of the regular season with an 11-1 mark. However, nipping at their heels are the La Feria Lionettes, who are a game back at 10-2.

The Lady Kats host Hidalgo tonight and can actually clinch a share of the conference crown with a win or can win the title outright with a win and a loss by La Feria, which is at Rio Hondo.

If, however, the Lady Kats stumble vs. Hidalgo and the Lionettes win tonight, the league championship would hang in the balance when the two teams face off in the regular-season finale on Monday, Oct. 25 at La Feria.
