HARLINGEN — Valley residents are being asked to continue conserving power today, especially this afternoon.
The conservation request, which started yesterday, comes from AEP and ERCOT, the grid operator for most of the Valley and Texas.
The request is limited to the Rio Grande Valley and officials say the ERCOT grid is not experiencing any systemwide issues.
“With some unplanned electric generation outages, combined with high temperatures in the region, we expect tight conditions during peak demand hours over the next few days,” said Dan Woodfin, ERCOT director of System Operations.
Woodfin said as long as residents and businesses in the Valley voluntarily conserve power there should be no need for rotating outages.
“Although recent improvements have increased transmission import capacity to the Valley, the removal of the Frontera generation facility by its owners from the ERCOT system has reduced our capacity to serve Valley-area demand during these types of conditions.”
Residents are urged to reduce demand on the system during the 3-7 p.m. peak demand hours.
