Elks Lodge treasurer indicted on theft charges

HARLINGEN – The woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Elks Lodge has been indicted on a third degree felony of theft of property.

The grand jury returned the indictment last week against Roberta Rogers Thomas, 45, the treasurer of the organization.

When she was arrested in February, detectives working with the lodge and its banks said they found evidence Thomas stole $13,000. They say they also found additional evidence when they searched her home. Police said at that time Thomas took the money for personal use.

Thomas is now accused of stealing between $20,000 and $100,000.

On Nov. 2, 2015, officials with Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 notified police they were concerned money had been stolen from the group over several months.

If found guilty, Thomas faces up to 20 years in jail and a fine.
