Man found dead on shoreline is identified

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The man found floating in the water dead behind beach front property has been identified.

The victim was Justin R. Curren, 71, from Waterwood.

Waterwood is a resort community located near Lake Livingston northeast of Huntsville.

Curren was found at approximately 2:27 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

The South Padre Island Police Department responded to a 911 call from a concerned citizen, who spotted Curren’s body floating in the water yards off the beach.

Curren was found around the 2000 block of Gulf Boulevard on the beach side, according to a news release from the city of South Padre Island.

E.M.S., fire and police responded to the emergency.

According to the news release, first responders found that witnesses had already pulled Curren out of the water.

Curren was unresponsive and was pronounced dead.

Detectives have indicated that they do not suspect foul play to be a factor.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

Island police conduct thorough investigations which require the department to closely evaluate many factors before a final determination is made.

Curren’s name was originally withheld pending family notification.
