Convention center spurs potential growth

HARLINGEN — The Harlingen Heights business district is going to grow.

It’s not only the $14.8 million convention center that’s coming soon.

But the cause of the growth likely is directly related to the building of that new facility.

Development is expected to sweep across the approximate 11-acre tract off the Interstate 69 frontage road, next to the city’s convention center site, City Manager Dan Serna told members of the Harlingen Community Improvement Board yesterday.

“We’re looking at that to be developed pretty quickly,” Serna said.

But, Serna declined to disclose information about development plans on the tract owned by Ezequiel Reyna, a Weslaco developer who owns the approximately 11-acre site on which the convention center and an attached 150-room hotel will be built.

“It will be a beautiful asset for the city,” Assistant City Manager Carlos Sanchez told board members, referring to the convention center. “It will improve the quality of life of the city.”
