Police seek clues on body found off Island beach

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The body of an elderly man was found floating in the water around the 2000 block of Gulf Boulevard yesterday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the man is being withheld pending family notification.

It was about 2:27 p.m. yesterday afternoon when EMS, fire and police responded to the beach and observed that witnesses had already pulled the body from the water.

The man was unresponsive and pronounced dead.

No foul play is expected, according to detectives.

But as with all unattended deaths, the South Padre Island Police Department will conduct an investigation.

According to a press release, they will closely evaluate many factors before a final determination on cause of death is made.

The report came from a concerned citizen who had seen the body floating in the water.

Efforts to obtain further comments were unsuccessful. Calls to the police department shortly after the incident were answered, but no further information was given other than the press release.
