The La Feria Lions improved to 3-0 with a 14-10 win last Friday over Corpus Christi Veterans.
Meanwhile, the Port Isabel Tarpons routed Hidalgo 37-6 to also elevate themselves to a perfect 3-0 mark.
Something’s got to give when the two face off this Friday at La Feria in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.
The visiting Tarpons have been getting a whole lot of production out of their ground game. In their win over Hidalgo, it was junior Travis Camacho who led the way with a 116-yard, two-touchdown performance. And in the Tarps’ 34-7 win over Tomball Christian in Week 2, senior Carlos Orduna led the pack by rushing for 179 yards on 20 carries for a TD.
As for the Lions, senior quarterback Jonathan Leija along with a very talented receiver corps has helped the team average 34 points per game. La Feria also has a solid ground attack led by sophomore speedster Darius Hernandez, who rushed for 177 yards and three scores in a 41-20 Week 2 win over Falfurrias.
Kickoff for Friday’s contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
OPEN WEEK: Several of the bigger schools are off this week, including Harlingen High (1-2), Harlingen South (3-0) and top-ranked San Benito (3-0). However, several good games remain on the schedule.
The Los Fresnos Falcons (2-0), who are one of the few area Class 6A teams playing this weekend, host McAllen Memorial (1-2), which lost to San Benito last Friday.
Rio Hondo (1-2), which fell to a very tough Brownsville St. Joseph squad last week, will look to rebound at Hidalgo (1-2).
St. Joseph (3-0), which is the Valley’s No. 10-ranked team, hosts Raymondville (0-3), which is in search of its first win of the season.
Lyford (2-1), which handed Raymondville its latest loss last Friday, hosts Grulla (1-2). Also in Class 3A, the Santa Rosa Warriors (2-1) host former league foe Aransas Pass, which is winless on the season at 0-3.
And in Class 2A, La Villa (0-3) is at Bishop (3-0) while Santa Maria (1-2) is home against Benavides (1-2).
