HARLINGEN — They didn’t waste much time.
Yesterday morning, crews manning backhoes began clearing the 11-acre site of the $14.8 million convention center and an attached Hilton Garden Inn.
Just the night before, city commissioners approved the project’s site layout.
As he manned a backhoe, a foreman said crews expect to work about a week to clear the heavily-wooded area along Brazil Road and Teege Avenue in the Harlingen Heights business district, catty-corner to Sam’s Wholesale Club.
“That’s a good sign the developer and the owner of the property are anxious to get moving,” Mayor Chris Boswell said yesterday afternoon.
Next, a survey will be conducted for the purpose of subdividing the property, City Manager Dan Serna said.
“What they’re doing is clearing it so they can get the survey completed so they can go into the subdividing process,” Serna said.
The approximately 11-acre site will be subdivided into three tracts.
“Now that all the agreements are approved, it’s time to move forward to get the project done,” Boswell said.
As part of the agreement, the city will fund construction of the 43,700-square-foot convention center, with a parking lot including 623 spaces, on eight acres along Brazil, Horizon and Teege.
