Gilbert Galvan, the principal at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy, has been named to the Region I Board of Directors for the Texas Association of School Administrators.
“This is a fantastic leadership team whose main goal is to promote students and secondary education,” Galvan said. “My philosophy of school administration focuses on the end result that my actions and decisions will ultimately have on students, faculty, and staff who fall under my guidance. As a campus leader, one must always work to fulfill the needs of the students who are the core product of all our efforts.”
Galvan earned a master’s degree from University of Texas at Brownsville in 1999. He attended Texas A&M University in Kingsville, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology/Elementary in May 1975. While at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, he earned an Associate of Arts in May 1973.
Galvan, an educator for the past 39 years and former Texas Classroom Teachers Association President, began his career as a teacher and has worked with other districts, including Weslaco and Raymondville.
He was also employed with Texas Southmost College as the Director of Student Services. While employed with the Raymondville Independent School District as the high school principal, Galvan earned Region I Area and Texas Association of Secondary School Principal of the Year.
He has also served his community as the mayor of San Benito from 1988-1992 and city commissioner from 1982-1988. He has also been involved in regional activities, including: Past President, Region 1 Middle School Association; Past PTA President; Regional Judge, Texas Teacher of the Year Program; and Portfolio Assessment Trainer, Region 1.
Galvan has also taken part in state level activities, including serving as a member of a judging panel for the Texas Teacher of the Year Program and as a member of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.
He is married to retired educator Maria Dominga Galvan. Graduates of San Benito High School, their three children are all attorneys.
