Organization giving away bicycle Saturday

HARLINGEN – Children and younger siblings of soldiers who are wounded or never come home, make a sacrifice many of us can’t even imagine.

That’s why there’s an organization dedicated to help make the day of one of these special kids.

Red, White and Bike is dedicated to recognizing this sacrifice through the donation of a bicycle for these “little heroes” – the young sons, daughters and siblings of Purple Heart recipients and soldiers killed in action.

Harlingen American Legion Post 205 is involved in this program and hopes others will become involved as well.

According to the Red White and Bike website, the organization provides a quality bike that has been selected by the child and is customized to tell the story about the service of their parent or older sibling.

“This gift will provide the child much pleasure while reminding others of their parents or sibling’s service and love of country. This is a very unique way to say ‘thanks.’”

On Saturday, at 1 p.m., at the American Legion Post 205 in Harlingen, Operation Red White and Bike in cooperation with the Harlingen Military Order of the Purple Heart will be honoring a little hero with a bike.

The ceremony will be held during a fundraiser for the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 544 fundraiser running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 205, at 504 American Legion Drive.

The local American Legion also would like area residents to become involved in the project by donating to the organization or by nominating a child to receive a bike.
